FAQ
Is embalming required?
Embalming is not required. Embalming is necessary, however, for certain arrangements, such as a funeral with a viewing. Direct cremation and immediate burial are types of services that may not require embalming.
How much does Social Security pay toward funeral expenses?
Social Security pays a $255.00 death benefit to a surviving spouse or dependent child. Funeral Directors file a Statement of Death Form SSA-721 to the Social Security Administration at death. There is not a death benefit for a person who is single or divorced at death. The local phone number for Social Security is 662-328-5112, or you can call 1-800-772-1213 for general information and services.
What should be brought to the funeral home when making arrangements?
Families should bring clothes (including underclothes), vital statistics such as social security and date of birth, and all related paperwork such as insurance, veterans, and cemetery papers.
How much does a funeral cost?
Funeral costs vary depending on the funeral home and type of service selected. There are two types of costs associated with a funeral: non declinable service fees provided by the funeral home and merchandise such as a casket, vault or urn.
Can I make my funeral arrangements before I die?
Yes. Today, prearrangement and prepayment of funerals are becoming more common. Prearranging will provide you with more time to view your options and give you a choice in your own funeral service. Prearrangement will provide you with the peace of mind that everything has been taken care of, relieving your family of the emotional and funeral burden that often comes with making arrangements when a loved one passes away. Oftentimes, making arrangements in advance also guarantees a service and funeral at today's prices, free from inflation.
